Cologne - Aurora

14 Feb 2019 165
Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior". The "official" name of this building is Ellmuehle, but most people know it as "Aurora Muehle". Aurora is a brand of flour milled here and a large Aurora-Logo is seen on the facade. The mill will cease working in 2020 and then the large area with all buildings around the "Deutz Harbour" on the right side of Rhine will be developed - into a mixed and lively district. Hopefully not that posh and polished as what was created out of the "Rheinauhafen" on the left side of the Rhine.

The small islands and shallow sandbars within the river are populated by thousands of birds. Here is a colony of black-headed gulls.
