Had a snack in this little food stall, neighbouring the Basilica di San Simplicio. Was quite good!

Olbia - Basilica di San Simplicio

The little hill, on which the Basilica di San Simplicio was erected outside the medieval city walls, has a long history. It is proven that here once was Carthaginian cemetery. When the Romans moved in after the Punic Wars, they had a temple right here, followed by an early "Byzantine" church (~ 600). The Basilica di San Simplicio was erected late 11th/early 12th century. This was a cathedral upto 1511. San Simplicio a martyr, whose relics are kept under the main altar, was probably the first bishop here within the early 4th century. Here is the nave and two aisles divided by granite columns and piers. On the left is a granite capitals with the heads of rams.

This relief on the outside seems older and may have come from an older church. Some see here "Jesus´ entry into Jerusalem" (Palmsunday). I doubt that, but have no better idea.

Sardinia - Costa Smeralda

07 Apr 2016 1 149
The Costa Smeralda is a worldwide known tourist destination with white sand beaches, golf clubs, private jet and helicopter services, superyachts and exclusive (strictly gated) hotels. The area is known for a extremely high density of celebrities, business leaders and very affluent visitors, that do not want to be seen (and photographed) by the average tourists. The development had started here in the early 1960s. It was financed by a consortium of companies led by Prince Karim Aga Khan. I met an old Sardinian, who told me stories about the sudden wealth of the local fishermen, shepherds and farmers. A wealthiness that for most of them did not really last very long.

Arzachena - Li Muri

Li Muri, a prehistoric necropolis, only about 1 km northwest of Bronze age Li Lolghi (see previous uploads) is even older. It is late Neolithic, dated to 3.500 - 2.700 BC. ascribable to the Arzachena culture, that left structures like Li Muri on the islands of Sardinia and Corsica. Li Muri is composed by five stone cists, four of which are surrounded by circles of small slabs, that probably once hold a heap of small stones and earth covering the cists (about 5000 years ago). Menhirs stand upright a little outside the circles.

Li Lolghi is a prehistoric gallery grave, erected during the Bronze Age by the Nuragic civilization. These graves are called "Tombe dei giganti" (= "Giants' graves"). Hundreds of them have been found on the island of Sardinia, all dated to 2.200-1.600 BC. Li Lolghi is 27 meters long - and the central stone (here seen from the back) is about 4 meters high.

Sardinia - Turtle

A turtle in the middle of the road - - I stood on the brakes!! This marginated tortoise was about 30 cms long. The species can only be found in the north eastern part of Sardinia. Here is a swiss/german website about turtles on the island of Sardinia. www.testudo.ch/b_sardinien.aspx

Santa Teresa Gallura

The photo was taken near Santa Maria Gallura, the northernmost town of the island. Seen on the horizon is Corsica (France). The "Strait of Bonifacio" between the islands is only about 11 kms wide, so the ferry only takes about an hour.
