Saint-André-de-Rosans - Prieuré

22 Dec 2016 1 187
The hamlet Saint-André-de-Rosans (pop. ~140) developed around a priory, that was founded in here 998, after the Abbey of Cluny had received a donation. The priory was attacked and got largely destroyed during the French Wars of Religions, but did exist upto the French Revolution. The former convent church, erected within the 11th and 12th century is in ruins since then. For sure the Benedictines had a nice garden like this 800 years ago, but maybe not that near to the convent´s church. Since the monks left and the church is in ruins, the villagers have gardens here.

Rignac - Saint-Germain

Rignac is a small village, that in medieval times may have served the pilgrims heading to (still) famous Rocamadour (10kms west). The church Saint-Germain, known already since the 12th century, got damaged during the 100 Years War, but got completely reconstructed in the second half of the 15th century. I met a friendly, polyglot lady inside the church, who showed me around. Behind the sacristy, she had laid out a garden, where she had planted many plants, that either are mentioned in the bible or having names, connected to the bible. Merci beaucoup Madame!
