Dunbar - Town House

Due to its strategic location on the border between Scotland and England, Dunbar was often involved in military conflicts. The fortress survived its longest siege in 1338. Agnes Randolph (1312–1369), aka Black Agnes, defended herself against the English army of Edward III for six months. In 1370, Dunbar was given the status of a burgh. From 1513 to 1560, the French ruled the town until they were driven out by the English. Oliver Cromwell finally had the castle destroyed in 1650. The historic Dunbar Town House, built towards the end of the 16th century, contains what is considered Scotland's oldest functioning Council Chamber. The building is home to a museum and gallery
