The rectangular Castillo de La Calahorra rises on a hill 60 meters above La Calahorra. It was built between 1509 and 1512 by the Marquis Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar y Mendoza, an illegitimate son of Cardinal Mendoza. During the Moorish attacks from 1568 to 1571, the castle withstood the attacks and offered refuge to some of the inhabitants of La Calahorra.
