The First World War hit Saint-Quentin very hard. In September 1914, the city was overrun by the German army. In 1916, Saint-Quentin was the center of the war zone, as the German defence line (aka "Hindenburg Line", "Siegfried Linie", run through here. The population got evacuated and during the following months around 80% of all buildings in Saint-Quentin got damaged. Some of these building got rebuilt after WWI in "Art Déco" style. This building, located at the Place Gracchus Babeuf, once was the local fish market hall.
