Biron - Saint-Eutrope / Notre-Dame

Notre-Dame is the parish church of Biron, a village 6kms east of Pons. Once the church was dedicated to Saint-Eutrope as a relic of "Saint Eutropius of Saintes", who came to the region to evangelize the Gauls in the 3rd century, was kept here. Erected within the 12th century the church got fortified soon after. I had been in Biron a couple if times before. This time I focussed onto the graffiti inside and outside the church. The "Assocation GRATH", who had orgaized an exhibition about medieval graffiti in Pons a year ago, had studied the graffiti here - and had used pencis, to make the lines better visible. Here are two riders. Maybe knights on horses..

Bougneau - Saint-Pierre

The church of Bougneau is surrounded by a graveyard. It dates from the 11th century, but was fundamentally rebuilt in the 15th century, so that little of the old structure has survived. The originally single-nave church was extended by a side aisle. The two-storey apse design seems to belong to the 12th century. There are many graffiti carved into the outer walls of the church. While in nearby Pons the medieval pilgrims carved many large ships into the medieval hospitals here are boat-like structures.

Saint-Quantin-de-Rançanne - Saint-Quantin

The single nave church was erected within the 12th century. The church got damaged during the Wars of Religions, when the bell tower, that stood above the choir, was completely destroyed. The facade has some extraordinary carvings. There are 23 roughly carved horse's heads. There are complex capitals - and above - a row of very fanciful corbels. I will uploud a few photos. A person rowing a boat.
