As an important Cinque Port, Hythe once possessed a bustling harbour which, over the course of 300 years, has now disappeared due to silting. St Leonard's Church, originally built in the late 11th century, is situated on the hill. The tower at its western end was destroyed by an earthquake in 1739 and restored in 1750.
