Tholos of Maleme

10 Apr 2025 11
The Minoan tholos tomb at Maleme is an example of Bronze Age funerary architecture. It is known for its size, long entrance passage, and monumental doorway. The tholos tomb was first discovered in the early 20th century, but its contents were unfortunately plundered. The tomb suffered further damage during World War II when German bombings led to the collapse of its domed roof. In 1966, the site was systematically excavated.

Aptera

Aptera It already known from the 14th-13th centuries BC. With its highly fortunate geographical situation, the city-state was powerful from Minoan through Hellenistic times, when it gradually declined. It was destroyed by an earthquake in the 7th century BC, but flourished again during Roman times. During the Saracen invasion in 824 AD, the city was destroyed and plundered. Unfortunately the archaeological park, with excavated ruins mainly from Roman times, is locked over the winter. So I could only peek over the fences.

Aptera - Koules fortress

The Koules fortress towers over the coast. It was built by the Ottomans after the Cretan revolution in 1866, during the effort to control Crete again through a net of fortification works. It is a sample of fortress architecture of 19th century. The purpose of its location was to control the Apokoronas valley where it used to be the passage to Chania. The fortress was the biggest fortification establishment of its period.
