Loch Eriboll

06 Feb 2025 2 17
Loch Eriboll is a 16 km long loch on the north coast of Scotland, up to 68 metres deep. On the Ard Neakie peninsula there is a lime kiln dating back to 1870, in which limestone was processed into quicklime. Quicklime could then be used to deacidify the soil. Sea-going ships find a safe place to anchor here. A circumstance that the British Navy has repeatedly taken advantage of. In the 1920s and 1930s, many warships waited here for deployment. The largest island in the loch, Eilean Choraidh, was used for aerial bombing practice. The "Battle of the Atlantic" ended here in 1945, when the surviving German 33 U-boats gathered here to surrender to the British Navy. Their ammunition and weapons were dumped on the spot, so there are probably a number of explosive devices at the bottom.
