EDM #304
17 Jan 2011 |
|
This week's challenge over at the Everyday Matters Yahoo group, challenge number 304, is to draw something you can tie.
So! There are 37 seconds left in the last quarter, the ball is on the 5 yard line, it's 4th down and goal and the score is......

EDM #305 and 306

|
As noted, EDM challenges 305 and 306 are, respectively, 'draw something huge' and 'draw a snack'. Subsequently I replied to both challenges with one sketch of muktuk!
I know, I know, many of you living below the 64th parallel are asking; "Hey Jim, uh, what is muktuk?"
OK, I'll be glad to explain; Muktuk is raw whale blubber.
Hey, whales are huge, right? Hey, muktuk is a tasty snack right? You've never tasted muktuk? Oh well…
So! You're sittin' around with your homies in Savoonga, Barrow, or some other Eskimo village. Somebody passes you a big chunk of muktuk. You sink your teeth in to a corner, pull the rest away from your face, and, with your sheath knife, cut the piece your teeth are holding off the big chunk, being careful, of course, not to cut off your nose or lips in the process. pass the big chunk on to the next guy and…. chew and… chew and… chew and chew! Yes, it is a bit chewy.
Personally I like my muktuk with a little Grey Poupon mustard.
Muktuk may not be to everyone's taste but it really is a great high energy snack. I remember occasions when I've done stupid and let myself get cold when out hunting at -40° (not a good idea!) taken a bite of muktuk and felt the heat pour back in to my body!
Most probably won't get to taste muktuk, as it can't be sold and only Eskimos can hunt whale, -but they can share it with friends, thank goodness, -else I wouldn't have had the chance to eat it. So just take my word for it, it is a tasty snack!
It's a good thing I proofed this before posting; I found I sometimes above wrote 'mukluk' (boot) instead of 'muktuk' (blubber). Mukluk tasty? That would have been a different story! -grin-

EDM 277, Something that should have been invented
09 Jun 2010 |
|
This week's Every Day Matters challenge; something that should have been invented. Forget the TV, forget the cell phone, forget the iPad, we NEED the iWay! -grin-
Just in case you are one of the 37 million people in the world that can't read my hand writing, I said above: 'The iWay! Forget about airport security, forget about subway waits, forget about taxis in the rain.. Take out your iWay, pick a destination, press the button and you're there!'

EDM Challenge # 276 Draw your grocery store
21 Jun 2010 |
|
I haven't shopped at this store lately (they only sell meat in bulk lots and it's a bit more than I need these days), but when my kids were growing up, one moose and a couple of caribou from this shop would take care of all our family meat needs for a full year!

EDM challenge 263, draw your favorite cleaning supply?
Hum, think mine would be somewhere between a D9 Caterpillar tractor, a Patton tank and maybe a little giant nozzle used for washing away mountains of overburden when gold mining.
Needless to say, cleaning ain't my favorite sport! :-)

Challenge 257
25 Jan 2010 |

So EDM's challenge #257 was 'inside your closet'. One of the first things I see in my closet is my bootjack sitting there on the floor. What, doesn't everybody have a bootjack, doesn't everybody know what one is? -GRIN-

EDM Challenge # 230, Draw a Map

Great art it ain't, but not bad bar stool philosophy... -I think that at some time we all succumb to this egocentric worldview. :-)

EDM 120, draw some coins
20 May 2009 |
|
So! EDM challenge # 120 was to draw some coins!
I happened to be reminiscing about a trip I made to the Cooks many years ago when I noticed this challenge.
Back then, even though the coin of the realm was the New Zealand dollar, the old Cook Island coin was still minted and available. On the face of the coin was the, rather crudely, poorly, drawn (I can do that!) image of the god Tangaroa (or maybe Ngaliyeyeu), who is, very obviously and very very grandly masculine.
Well I got to thinkin', that if they were to re-mint the coin in this day and age, they'd wish to cater to the to the sensitivities of the most sensitive of visitors and avoid offense to any and all, -no matter how easily offended.
Hence I came up with this design for a "new" Cook Island dollar!
By the way: Rather than "crudely or poorly drawn", sensitive artists such as myself much prefer you say "primitive!" -grin-

In reply to the EDM challenge, here's a quick sketch of my thumb.
-And now for the obligatory disclaimer-: Remember this is a picture, only a picture, no thumbs were harmed, abused, injured or mutilated during the production of this grand work of art!

Soda Can, EDM Challenge #205
05 Jan 2009 |
|
The Every Day Matters challenge was to sketch a soda can, welllll
I used a little artistic license here. See I had this bottle of Pepsi Cola I brought back from the Russian Far east in the late eighties and I had this little stubby can of ginger ale left over from a holiday party (I've lots of cans left over, real men {and women} drink their whiskey straight!:-)) so....
For my sketch I used the ginger ale can but put the Cyrillic Pepsi label on it.
