Some further progress on installing the floor planks - the undersides and edges are pre-painted.
BR971 - hopper one end slope
28 Feb 2018 |
|
|
Quite some time has been spent building the support frames and other parts for the internal hopper for the waggon [the arson attack left limited evidence for the structure]. It has also been prefinished with stain and a semi-matt varnish to protect the timber. This one end slope is now all present and correct.

One of four trap doors - just need to trim the ends of the blots flush - before hanging from the pivot bar, which is underneath the centre spine.
Apologies for the soft focus, the pointnshoot camera was having an off-day for some reason.

The last of the eight fan timbers having the angled tenon pairs cut, almost ready for a full dry fit, after cutting the requisite mortices - but without the tie-bars.
And then a good sweep up of the floor !

Detail of the paired tenons on one end of the side cill timber. This is green Oak, which is an unseasoned timber and somewhat heavy to work, both in weight and technique.
BR971 - underframe 1

The short lengths of green oak, for the internal parts of the underframe.
BR971 - body demolished
28 Feb 2018 |
|
The partially burnt remains of almost all of the bodywork had now been removed. After the last pieces are dealt with, it will be time to record details of fixings and then dismantle the underframe.
.
The new green oak underframe is being worked on concurrently.
