whn - ironwork

Interesting piece of ironwork, which I have walked over many times in the past decade ...
So, in the past 24 years, the areas with pontoons have grown in both Queen's Dock and West Strand - shown here with "swinging" moorings.
1822 - further ironwork

Another selection of ironwork from 1822 for attention - beginning with de-rusting, repairs & straightening and then the several stages of painting.

The entrance gate to the Norwich Model Boat Club pavilion in Eaton Park - their "lake" is behind me.
1822 - ironwork
01 Jul 2022 |
|
Almost all the ironwork from 1822 ...
The "W-irons" are rather heavy but seem fit for further service, as do most of the larger components, although some straightening may be needed.
However, most of the "washer strips" and the thin corner plates have been badly rusted and need replacing.
1822/1986 - wheels

|
Just the wheels left ! 1986 at the back, 1822 nearer the camera.
Note that the axle journals have been wrapped for protection.
NCMM - headstock straps
01 Jul 2022 |
|
Repaired and replacement headstock straps, a coat of red oxide primer has been applied - a few holes need drilling. Plus we need at least another three making.
1986 - buffers

Buffers and buffer shrouds, plus some other ironwork.
Awaiting grit-cleaning, which will be followed by painting.
IoM[2]PC - rusty ironwork

Some substantial, if rather rusty ironwork, barring access to an alcove.
NSR23 - ironwork added

These two metal hoops are original. They are now set into their roof sticks, which are specially shaped to accommodate the brackets.
They are placed across gaps that would otherwise have had a bulkhead, and serve to prevent the carriage sides from working further apart.
BR971 - mixed glossed ironwork
28 Feb 2018 |
|
Further selection of ironwork has now reached the black gloss top coat.
Items include, two footsteps, two buffer housings, the "semi-circular" strips are from the trapdoors, a drawhook and various bolts, brackets etc. Once the paint has hardened, some items have been wrapped in newspaper to keep them clean and prevent damage whilst they wait to be re-installed during the rebuild.
BR971 - main spring
28 Feb 2018 |
|
This balances the drawbar pull against pressure to the buffers, as you might expect, there is a second one for the other end of the waggon. It is very heavy, and as the numbers of leaves indicates it is a strong spring. In the final black gloss.
Apologies for the dodgy focus, the camera was being awkward.
BR971 - drawhook and other parts
28 Feb 2018 |
|
The metalwork painting is now reaching the black gloss top coats. This selection includes all four headstock hoops, one drawhook (very heavy !) and various brackets and tiebars.
BR971 - spring pads and so on
28 Feb 2018 |
|
Another pile of ironwork, shown in undercoat, will soon be turned black.
On top, a couple of hoops that go on the end of the headstocks, to control shakes and splits. underneath are the buffer cups that connect to the main drawbar spring.
In the middle are some junction brackets (keep in mind, these help hold the waggon joints together as no glue is used)
On the right are the pads for the suspension springs at the wheel sets.
BR971 - retaining loops
28 Feb 2018 |
|
Various U-Bolts and retaining loops that hold the waggon together, as no glue is used. Most of these, used in pairs, hold the bottom foot of the side bolsters against the cill. [see PiP at top left] Several have been repaired, now in undercoat, will be black gloss quite soon.
BR971 - trap door catches
28 Feb 2018 |
|
|
Part of the trap door mechanisms, currently in undercoat and will be going black shortly.
The side cill behind the chair is making itself useful as an impromptu painters bench, some of the bolts are in red oxide primer. The second dose of preservative will shortly be put in the visible holes.
BR971 - wheelset and axleboxes primed
28 Feb 2018 |
|
|
One wheel-set and various axle box halves returned after cleaning and priming at the shot-blasters. The red oxide primer is more reflective than normal as it was raining until a few minutes ago.
BR971 - unloading wheelsets
BR971 - one mainspring amongst other things
28 Feb 2018 |
|
One of the main (coupling) springs and other assorted ironwork after the trip to be cleaned and primed. The black item is one of the timber inserts from the brake rigging, just making sure it doesn't get lost.
