nbx - nest cup {1 of 2}

30 Apr 2022 18
Long abandoned nest [cup] found displaced from the support branches and hidden in ivy during the winter, only retrieved for an image in late April. Tucked it back near where it was found with some hay. Was made from roots, mud and may have had some grass as a lining - probably a blackbird or thrush, as Turdus sp breed freely around here.

oaw[b&w] - wasp nest {1 of 5}

Not well-focused close-up of a small wasp's nest on the top edge of an "up and over" garage door. I think that you can just make out the patterning - which shows different materials were sourced for that building session. Sadly, I think the inhabitants have all died.

Side view of the larger wasp's nest on the garage door. Sadly, I think all the residents have died.

Close-up of a wasp's nest on the garage door. The patterning of the layers isn't quite as clear as I had hoped, although the patina of the galvanizing has shown up nicely.

twb[23] - not gulls but pigeons

So much for the anti-bird netting. This pair of pigeons have managed to construct their nest on top of the wire netting, and tread down another area as a landing / off nest zone. . That white door is the LOCKED fire exit from the cafe.

oaw - Mrs Swallow

11 Jul 2023 5 3 117
Mrs Swallow [Hirundo rustica]. Sitting on eggs ... or maybe brooding nestlings. [picture taken with flash on a sneak visit]. We've tried not to disturb her, not always successfully, but she obviously wasn't too bothered, as some youngsters fledged a few days later, maybe around a week. Soon seen swooping around after insects.

oaw - nest eggs

Pretty sure these are blackbird eggs. MrsB just flew off for a comfort break, that's how I knew where she was ! and so I'm confident that I hadn't disturbed her sitting. I didn't go near the nest again, so no idea how well they faired - we still have several juveniles floating about ...

oad(g&h) - egg box fun

10 Jun 2021 75
Another batch of pups having fun with an old egg box, some wood shavings and straw / hay. ... [gerbils chomp all the time, which keeps their teeth in good order]

hin[22] - nest egg ?

20 Jul 2022 84
Unfortunately, this nest and the two eggs have been abandoned, possibly, may have been wood pigeons ? [Taken with zoom from a fair distance away, after several days checking - from a concealed position - whether the birds concerned had left the nest site : because I never saw them over that period, I'm guessing that it was pigeons].

oaw[HH] - I'm off to bed

After snacks - dried mealworms (an early breakfast to us, but late supper for her!) off to bed, and snoring in short order.

oaw[HH] - intricate nest

We've been looking after another young hedgehog - but one with nest building skills. This is straw, hay and newspaper strips twisted together.

rbb - 1 nest

I was trying to capture the contents of a nest, but the camera and window glass refuse to co-operate. see note. Two nights after I took this we had a thunderstorm and torrential rain, the adult male and the smaller of the two nestlings were already dead, but the larger.........
