GGF - Dunstan Staithes {Feb2022}

|
An aerial photograph of Dunstan Staithes and the housing development on the "Riverside" site of the NGF90 / Gateshead Garden Festival site. {Feb 2022} Some of the surviving re-planting is doing well !
Sadly, it also shows that the Staithes Basin has silted up again and that the arson damage to the wooden staithes has not yet been repaired, despite the Staithes being Grade II Listed ...

Not my Image ; fair use & public information

Display garden on Riverside [next to the R. Tyne] The "Spaceship" is the UFO in the background.
Scanned image.
But I need to find my notes / the guidebook / map to work out which one it is !

Pretty sure that this was taken during the later stages of the construction phase, well before May 1990.
I'm looking across the R.Tyne, from near the eastern end of what is now Newcastle Business Park.
The structure of the extreme right is "Dunston Staithes" - the means of loading coal onto ships for export. It was restored for the festival, and it's centenary !
[Very unfortunately, parts of it have been cremated by idiotic vandals, on more than one occasion, and it is now badly damaged]
GGF - Blackpool 167

Blackpool 167 having disgorged the passengers at the southern end of The Link, is about to have the trolley pole turned.
The Festival Wheel, on Norwood, is in the right background and the A-frame footbridge to Elsington & Norwood is to the left.
167 is not a tram local to Tyneside, but was a substitution by Crich, because the original choice Gateshead No.5 had a tendency to derail & stick on the points.
.
The shed behind is that tall so the double decked Sunderland 100 & Newcastle 102 will fit inside at night. A similar height shed at the northern end of The Link also contained the depot facilities.
GGF - Sunderland 100

Sunderland 100 in a British Steel livery, applied as part of the sponsorship deal that was involved in funding the restoration.
Dunston Rocket in the background, so looking North along The Link.
100 aka Metropolitan 331 is a "Feltham" with the driver in a separate cab. Very nice in wet weather, but more like a hot greenhouse on sunny days.
.
Note that 100 has two poles, instead of the bow collector it should have.
GGF - Newcastle 102

Newcastle 102 is heading southwards along "The Link" between Riverside / Dunston and Eslington Norwood. The "Link" was a relatively long and narrow strip joining the two main sections.
The tower block in the background was known as the "Dunston Rocket"
