As there are two gun emplacements in this view, I assume that it was taken during WW2 by reconnaissance aircraft.

PQR - Quarry Station

Stirling Hill Quarry Station. Date not known. A group of convicts (ie those with prison sentences that included "hard labour") about to board the train that will return them to Peterhead Prison - with such short shadows, probably for their mid-day meal - just over two and a half miles away. In the foreground is a train on tipper waggons, loaded with the granite for further processing in the Admiralty Yard, next to the prison.

The south breakwater was built at a slightly different angle to on this map, which does give you the overall locations of the main features and the Prison / Harbour Railway.

PQR - Admiralty Yard

Chart of the work yard. The south breakwater in the Bay is to the left and Peterhead prison is below the area shown in this orientation. Note: North is to the left on this chart, which is well out of copyright.

TiG - Study the ship scales

We watched the vessel with the orange superstructure come into the Harbour of Refuge. The two little orange boats in the marina in the foreground are oil rig "drop" escape boats.
