BR971 - "W" and number

04 Mar 2018 2 469
The letter "W" and the waggon fleet number "971". For information; the metal plate is the "Batter Plate" (or "batter board") - each hopper has three per side. Their purpose is to protect the planking when sledgehammers were used to free up locked or frozen loads of coal and persuade the contents to fall out of the trapdoors.

BR971 - side view

04 Mar 2018 1 404
Stepped back for the full side view. The considerable amount of fire damage can be estimated from the burnt edges visible. . The stack of wood is the shorter sections of green oak required for the underframe. (two headstocks, two cross pieces and one centre spine).

BR971 - w-iron and brake lever

04 Mar 2018 4 2 473
The pin-down facility for the brake lever is attached via some of the same bolts that hold the W-irons in place. The lever and bracket will be re-usable, after cleaning and repainting (note, the hand loop should be white). Fire damage to the interior is visible.

BR971 - tare mark

04 Mar 2018 1 428
Showing the relative positioning of the tare mark.

BR971 - tare detail

04 Mar 2018 1 368
Detail of the tare mark (the unloaded waggon was assumed to weigh 5 tons 14 hundredweights). As with the fleet number, this tare mark appears on both sides so it doesn't matter which way the waggon has been turned when it passes over the weighbridge.

BR971 - side against the wall

04 Mar 2018 399
Mainly for the livery information, but also showing the fire damage.

BR971 - side bolster (1 of 4)

04 Mar 2018 1 361
Two retaining loops (large U bolt) and two large coach bolts locate the bottom ends of the four side plank bolsters. Each side plank has two bolts holding them to the bolster, with a long metal strip on the outside and square washers to spread the load)

BR971 - other direction

Detail of the waggon's fleet number. The extensive fire damage is evident.

BR971 - one end

04 Mar 2018 378
The "narrow" bolster end, showing damage to the upper planks from the arson attack. The horizontal grab rail is somewhat bent. Note the grab rails on the corner plates, one vertical the other at an angle.

BR971 - letters E & S

04 Mar 2018 359
The letters "E" and "S" with the remains of the "tare mark" below the E. Note; the batter plate is in poor condition and also the further evidence of fire damage.

BR971 - letter S

04 Mar 2018 355
Detail for the letter "S" - I find this is probably the most difficult letter to get right, especially freehand.

BR971 - letters B & O

04 Mar 2018 358
You'll have to take my word for the left hand letter being "B" and the "O" is a little clearer. Damage party from the weather but also some planking has, literally, disappeared in smoke.

BR971 - internal view

04 Mar 2018 371
Arson damage to the hopper, trap doors and the chassis. (the item in the foreground is one of the footsteps)

BR971 - hopper support

04 Mar 2018 357
Detail of the hopper support frames. (and those spider webs appeared in two or three days !)

BR971 - hopper frame

04 Mar 2018 348
Showing the design of the hopper supports. Some of the underframe timber has completely burnt away.

BR971 - hopper end

04 Mar 2018 365
The extensive damage caused by the arson attack. However, enough remains to inform the restoration work.

BR971 - fire damage sides

04 Mar 2018 2 1 418
Looking at the inside of the side planks. The fire damage is extensive, but most of the ironwork will live again.
