Some freshly opened oak leaves, down by the riverside in Haltwhistle. . A few of these would flavour a type of home-brew much liked by the Norse / Danes aka non-raiding Vikings, according to a winery up near Dundee I visited a few years ago. You need to pick only a few from each tree, and do it too late and your brew will be very bitter from the tannins present in the older leaves.

Still cutting the various holes in the replacement headstock. Green oak is quite hard to work, and is very likely to "shake" - these splits are along the grain and do not significantly affect the strength. Compare to the very decayed original ...

The better half of the buffer shroud from 1173, it is quite a large doughnut - we think it would have been turned from green oak originally. [sorry about the mess in background ... someone got told !]

The main structural frame is now glued up and painted to undercoat, although it looks like the roofsticks and cant rails are in cream gloss.

Almost complete, now fully glazed. Stonework to match the existing cottage. Conservatory / Porch built from solid oak beams, stained and varnished.

This supply of timber will be used in the restoration of two waggons from the Bowes Railway that were almost destroyed in an arson attack by some mindless vandals in 2008. The larger pieces at the front are green oak. and will become the underframes. The four largest sections were 6" x 12" and in two lengths and went to make up the underframe for the Drift Bogie. As green oak was very heavy, we were pleased that the dimensions for the grey waggon were a little smaller. The larger stack at the rear is a durable softwood, Douglas Fir, in a range of sizes for the body planking.
