That, unless I'm very much mistaken, is a Sentinel steam waggon ...

The other {luxury} end of the transport fleet - Mr D Smith's Roll Royce. The plate THH 391 indicates registered in Carlisle

Posed outside the Hadrian Paints office block. BNL 979B in a mustard and red livery is what looks like an AEC "Mercury" waggon. The regno was issued in Northumberland during 1964, which nicely dates this image. [Note the wpm livery, so probably new / freshly washed - judging by the wet tyre marks] [Note the second - trying to work oy what that load bogie bolster waggon is carrying]. . not my image : fair use & public information

s&w - the garage

That's "The Garage" ... note the petrol pump ! From 2006 to present [2025] it has been the workshop for Stanegate Restorations & Replicas. Unit K1. For the first three years we were in the left hand side [door & two windows], then we moved to the larger right hand side [three windows and door] until 2015[?] when we combined both sides into one operational workshop, there is a dividing wall with a connecting door. . not my image : fair use & public information

Also have a better colour version of this - quite interested in the bolster waggon on the railway ... . Posed outside the Hadrian Paints office block. BNL 979B in a mustard and red livery is what looks like an AEC "Mercury" waggon. The regno was issued in Northumberland during 1964, which nicely dates this image. s&w - in action in-house firefighters

31 Mar 2025 5
The in-house fire-fighters in action - they are at the hydrant just outside the garage building [now Unit K and home to Stanegate Restorations], with their electric runabout at the rear of the group. . not my image : fair use & public information

s&w - posed in-house fire-fighters

31 Mar 2025 6
Posed shot of eight members of the in-house firefighters, on or with their electic [battery run-about], in front of the "fire station. , The runabout [painted red, as you would expect] is currently in the care of NELSAM {the North East Land Sea and Air Museum, based in Sunderland} . The "Fire Station" appears to be in front of the garage building [now home to Stanegate Restorations]. . not my image : fair use & public information

s&w - mid 1950s

31 Mar 2025 5
The Hadrian Works site in the mid-1950s. [appears to be a re-touched aerial image] Points to note - i) there appears to be a rail transhipment dock in the middle of the row of buildings next to the railway. ii) very few cars, other vehicles or people visible.

s&w - extract from employee's handbook

31 Mar 2025 5
Plan [map] of Smith & Walton's Hadrian Paint Works, scanned from the employee's handbook. Undated, but I think it is some time after 1966, as it differs in a few details from the mid-1950s model [especially areas 1 & 2 - warehouse was built in October 1966, after the big fire].. . not my image : fair use & public information

HWH/s&w - smith and walton paints

26 Mar 2025 7
Smith & Walton's Hadrian paint works in Haltwhistle, probably in the 1950s [hence the assumed date taken] At it's peak, there were around 500 people employed here, and they made some significant advances in paint technology. www.smithhaltwhistletrust.co.uk/john-smith-and-sons-smith-walton-1857-1961 not my image : fair use & public information
