DMU 158-815 formed our train on our journey to Ashington.
The driver has already changed head and tail lights on the turnaround.

Studying the station layout whilst waiting for our train back to Newcastle.
The station is actually a newly built bay platform, with the double tracks of the Blyth & Tyne heading off under the road bridge towards Lynmouth Power Station [now running on biomass, not coal]

The Northumberland Line has been [re-]built on the Blyth & Tyne alignment. Reopened to passengers on 15Dec2024 between Newcastle and Ashington. At that point only Manors and Seaton Delaval were ready, the other intermediate stations will follow during 2025.

The cut back old platform at Ashington. Also note that it is lower and narrower than required under modern standards.

This is what is left of the old station buildings at Bedlington [Blyth & Tyne] - The re-opened Northumberland Line will have a station in Bedlington.

The new station at Seaton Delaval, with plenty of protective fences.
Other than Manors and the terminal stations, this was the only one ready by the re-opening on 15th December 2024. There is quite a big car park, and [I think] bus interchange facilities.

SBB[24]/DoL[24] {3/5} - sign

That sign has been there so long that the tree has begun to grow around it.
If/when that tree is felled, I do hope they don't try slicing that area with a normal saw, that would get very messy - and probably expensive.

This is the old weigh-house for slate passing through Portmadoc for export by sea [as it was known then, back in 1863].
Now, it is the minor station Boston Lodge Halt, and the nearest building is formally known as "the bothy" with a number of more other informal names, it has done duty as accommodation for volunteers in the past, although it lacks some amenities. The buildings behind are the "old engine shed, with a more recently built extension.
The seats are a pleasant place to await a passing train - if you wish to board, then you need to give a clear signal to the driver, the route has just started the 1 in 80 climb into the hills. [Done that a few times, over the years].
STR[H] - Hickins' [aka the Crossing Cafe]

Crossing Cafe - aka Hickins - is in this end of the Station Building at Alston. This is the upper terminus of the South Tynedale Railway [STR].
Currently [2023] an extremely dog-friendly establishment, that also does a good range of drinks, cakes, snacks and light meals for humans.
We are regular, if not frequent, customers.
STR - Picnic tables

The area around Alston Station [South Tynedale Railway's upper terminus] is well supplied with picnic tables, and there are more tables & seating under the station canopy. Plus there's the cafe - which is currently known as Hickins' as well as the Crossing Cafe since the outside seating overlooks the level crossing.
2023 - the current menu & standard of service is very good and as it is dog-friendly we go there at least once a month for a meal and drinks.

Under the canopy on platform 4 at Keighley, with the train almost ready to depart.
That bench has really spindly legs, imo, compared to the usual railway company designs.
The "mind the gap" warning is needed, especially on the curved section of the platform by the water tower.

The heavy horse is never bothered by the Iron Horses, and often comes to look when a down train is waiting here in case a snack is available. The sheep are far more likely to dash off in the same circumstances !
Often, waiting passengers admire the flowers and shrubs in the garden, which runs the full length of the down platform, this flower bed is some 450ft long and varies between 10ft and 16ft wide (with the only palm trees on the railway).

Running in board [station name board] at the upper terminus of the Vale of Rheidol Railway.
Devil's Bridge in Welsh is Pontarfynach.
I do like the design of the fence around the back of platform, and the flower beds are still making a good show of colour.
HWH - Railway Station between the wars

Haltwhistle Railway Station (old postcard).
Taken sometime between the two world wars (so 1920s - 1930s, the caption says the mid-30s).
A very busy place, it looks like four engines working, with a multitude of rolling stock and sidings, even a turntable.
Today (2021) there are just the two through lines (Newcastle / Carlisle) and a single, short siding remains in the goods yard, although the goods shed has gone, to be replaced by a signal cabin. The rest of the buildings, including the listed signal box and the footbridge remain.
Recently, the South Tynedale Railway bought the land on which the Alston branch line train is standing. They have a long term aim of reaching Haltwhistle with their 2ft gauge track, despite the "bypass" having severed their embankment. Their most recent extension was to Slaggyford, but the Covid-19 pandemic caused them massive financial problems, effectively bankrupting their operational activities. The viaduct now carries a walking/cycle route.
