CoLC - UK's water 'ardness

03 Jan 2025 1 5
Water hardness does indirectly affect the cost of living - those living in hard water areas spend more on soap / detergents, plus certain electrical "white goods" do not last as well - things like furred up kettles and washing machines. Also hot water pipework can become almost blocked by limescale deposits - and it needs more expensive energy to heat that water as the scaling is a poor conductor of heat. [Quibble - this does not distinguish between temporary & permanent hardness - a chemist would do so] . Not my image : fair use & public education

BtC - visiting the Burn IV {5 of 5}

30 Oct 2024 20
Don't go too close to the edge ... the burn is undercutting the banks along here. Even more so to my right, on the outside of a sharp bend, especially as there's been some rain recently. Bella's having a serious sniff of some grass - when I got there I could just detect that the local fox was scent-marking last night.

Nope, no beach - the stones are underwater, The burn is flowing very fast. No wonder that Bella had some discretion.

Ok, Bella, we'll go and look - but I suspect it'll be flooded down at the beach.

An expedition or two - walking Bella - along the riverside and up to the Alston Arches. It was cold enough for icicles on the edge of the weir.

Ben de-Dog appreciated the notice ! and the view of Llyn Tegid. Taken from a passing train and over Ben's head, the trip on the BLR was the last - actually two days afterwards - part of SBB for 2019. [reposted 2nd April 2023]

clch - water stress projection - 2040

01 Dec 2021 104
Areas of the world that will have higher demands for fresh water compared to the supply available, by 2040. Note (1) that this is on a national scale, and that within countries, there are considerable regional differences. For example, certain parts of South Africa are already above the 80% barrier. . .
