HWW Kirby Muxloe Leicestershire 7th April 2024

Another image from Kirby Muxloe Castle. The brickwork on the spiral staircase is pretty complex and with the modern repairs the textures are interesting. It is a ruined, fortified manor house in Kirby Muxloe, just outside Leicester. William, Lord Hastings, began work on the castle in 1480, founding it on the site of a pre-existing manor house. It was never finished because in the cut-throat politics of the Middle Ages he was on the wrong side and the Duke of Gloucester, later King Richard III had him beheaded. HWW to everyone. Enjoy your day!

Kenilworth Warwickshire 12th October 2023

Another shot from our recent visit to Kenilworth Castle about an hours drive from Leicester. The castle is a very atmospheric set of ruins today but in the Middle Ages up to the mid-17th century it was a very important & impressive palace. The Civil War was its undoing and although it was never attacked the keep was slighted on the orders of Parliament to stop it being used in future. HWW everyone. Enjoy your day..

HFF Tintagel North Cornwall 22nd September 2023

19 Oct 2023 33 26 307
The new English Heritage footbridge over the gorge to Tintagel Castle looking from the castle side. The steps on the left are the original route across and are now used as the exit for those fit enough to use them! Recent excavations found the remains of structures from the Dark Ages, including well-constructed buildings of relatively large size dated to the 5th and 6th centuries, with pottery and glass finds indicating that the people who lived at Tintagel were of an upper class status, drinking wine imported from the eastern Mediterranean and using food vessels from North Africa and Gaul. In 2017, archaeologists discovered at the castle a 7th century slate window ledge inscribed with a mixture of Latin, Greek, and Celtic words, names, and symbols. Maybe King Arthur & Camelot did exist... HFF to everyone & have a great weekend.

DB electric 185 198-9 on a tank train heading north towards Koblenz passes the ruins of Ehrenfels Castle and the vineyards on the east bank of the Rhine. Together with the Mäuseturm and the Klopp Castle it formed a northward barrier from the 13th Century, in order to protect the territory of the archbishopric of Mainz. The castle, which was used in times of war as a hiding place for the cathedral treasury of Aachen, was extensively destroyed in 1689.

HFF Trechtingshausen Rhineland-Palatinate Germany…

30 Mar 2023 23 17 334
Five years ago to the day we took a river trip along the beautiful Rhine gorge between Koblenz and Bingen/Rudesheim. This is the Burg Reichenstein in Trechtingshausen on the west bank of the river. Of course there has to be a train somewhere - just in view on the left is an electric multiple unit heading north towards Bingen with a power boat on the right seemingly racing it.... And oh yes, there is a fence so HFF everyone. Have a great weekend

Beautiful sunset light over Eivissa castle walls (Ibiza). In the season no doubt most people would be on the beach (or still sleeping off their clubbing!!) but we saw just a handful of people on the climb up and around the castle on this late November Wednesday afternoon/evening.
