Part of a bumber crop of mid-to-late 60's television classics - Batman, Get Smart, Lost in Space, the Munsters, the Addams' Family, and Gilligan's Island to name a few - Hogan's Heroes featured the camp hi-jinx of American P.O.W.s and their bumbling German counterparts. Issue No. 1, June 1966.

“Penned up in the Mediterranean’s most infamous prison farm, beautiful young bodies subject to their cruel jailer’s every whim, these man-craving convict women joined forces with a brawling Yank adventurer to burst out of their barbed wire hell cage, setting off a love-and-vengeance revolt that sent tremors through an entire Mid-east empire!” If that isn't the all-time, most perfectly compelling lead-in, then I'm the poorest excuse for a Yank adventurer wannabe ever! From a story by Neil Turnbull, as it appeared in the July 1966 issue of Male magazine. Artwork by Bruce Minney.

Some of the other publishers - Harvey Comics, in this case - tried to keep up with Marvel and DC in the 60's by offering their own superheroes. Some were recycled, like MLJ's Shield and Fly, but others were new creations, and many of them forgettable, like Jigsaw, Man of a Thousand Parts. The title lasted only two issues. Jigsaw, Big Hero Adventures - Issue no. 2, December 1966.

Aquatic adventure was a popular genre in the 1960's, with television shows like "Sea Hunt" and "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," in addition to a host of sea-faring comic heroes like Tower Comics' Undersea Agent, Davy Jones. The "Undersea" acronym seemed a bit forced - United Nations Department of Experiment and Research Systems Established at Atlantis - but in a decade of rampant acronyms - SPECTRE, UNCLE, THRUSH, SHIELD, AIM, THUNDER, SPIDER, SWORD, WASP, etc. - I'm sure nobody cared. ;-) Undersea Agent - Issue No. 3, June 1966.
