Oh, where to begin?! “The Rebel harlots beckoned to lusting Yankees.” Or perhaps, the mad title itself – “The Desperate Raid of the Rebel Pink Panty Platoon.” One might as easily cite the introductory paragraph – “Diane’s lovely wantons marched to the tune of a sultry love song. Their battle banner was a petticoat waiving in the breeze. They were the South’s deadliest weapon.” Man’s Escape, February 1964 issue.

Strangely enough, this amazing men's adventure magazine cover features a pinkish-hued and sparsely-clad saboteur, but it is a grossly misleading illustration for "The Desperate Raid of the Pink Panty Platoon" hinted at inside. Instead, that story takes place during the American Civil War, not World War II as one might conclude from the cover. The outrageous splash illustration for that tale of rebel creativity can be seen nearby in my photostream. Man’s Escape, February 1964 issue.

How many young readers today would even comprehend that these were wooden indians, and furthermore, that they were used to sell cigars? Surely, the context would be lost. Forbidden Worlds - Issue No. 123, October 1964. Cover art by Kurt Schaffenberger.

The Gold Key series Space Family Robinson actually predates the television series Lost in Space, which stars another namesake family, the Robinsons. Instead of Will and Penny, we have here youngsters Tim and Tam, whose parents Craig and June are also scientists like the crew from Lost in Space. Absent, however, from this earlier series are the meddlesome stowaway-saboteur, Dr. Smith, and his oft-reluctant companion, the Robot. Space Family Robinson - Issue no. 7, April 1964.

I don't get it - the people themselves changed to metal? Who's invading who here? Are the newfound metal people doing the invading, or just some ingrates from Rigel looking to cash in on the boom in precious space metals? I'm confused. Airmont SF4 - Invaders From Rigel by Fletcher Pratt, 1964.
