I can recall playing cards at a table just like this with my cousins during winter holidays when it was too cold to play outside. Those were still the days when "children should be seen and not heard," but we failed in that regard on more than one occasion. 50 Card Games for Children by Vernon Quinn, 1946.

Tonight's three vintage offerings all differ in their treatment from the usual depictions of a jovial Santa or the hi-jinx of anthropomorphic snowmen, and each of these differs further in its progressive abstraction. This card still hints at a more traditional, illustrative style, yet the trees stand in stark enough silhouette to the sparse sky that it serves stylistically as the perfect bridge to the next of the trio...

This final entrant is abstract and highly geometric - a tad unusual for its age - but graphically not without its charms. And there you have it... my Christmas card mini-thesis! ;-p

This card boasts a certain flatness, along with an interesting palette, which adds to the overall contrast and effect, perfectly conjuring that crisp, cool winter feel. At least to me it does! ;-)
