Much like its companion Mad - which of course survived as a magazine - Panic was a satire comic published by E.C. Comics and even boasted the similar slogan, "humor in a varicose vein." This November 1954 issue spoofed the movie "How To Marry a Millionaire" starring Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall. As if that wasn't enough, it sports a very unusual cover by Al Feldstein featuring a horizontal layout!

And to think, this pre-dates the movie "The Blob" by a good four years! Weird Science - Issue No. 22, November-December 1953. Wonderful cover art by Wally Wood.

Almost every E.C. cover could be considered a classic, from the logo itself to the stark, in-your-face subject matter. Shock Suspense Stories - Issue No. 10, August-September 1953. Cover art by Jack Kamen.

Harvey Kurtzman had a distinctive style, mixing fine and heavy linework to create cartoonish but gritty tableau the likes of which had never been seen before in comics. Like most E.C. books, a typical issue of Frontline Combat would likely include four different stories, each illustrated by a master in the field like Wally Wood, George Evens, Jack Davis, Alex Toth, John Severin, Joe Orlando, or even Bernie Krigstein. Frontline Combat - No. 3, November 1951 issue. Cover art by Harvey Kurtzman.
