From the arid American West to the skies above WWI-era Germany to the secret lairs of imperialistic villians, through and through, the pulps promised escapism, and they certainly delivered.
The Depression doesn't seem to be affecting these blissful ramblers as they almost appear to cruise among the clouds.

Some people consider Flying Aces a pulp magazine even though it was printed mostly on glossy paper. Certainly some of the fiction is indistinguishable from other aviation pulps.

For me, part of the allure of Bradshaw Crandell's pastel style of illustration lies in the fact that while the faces are usually tight, everything else is wonderfully loose. He sure made it look effortless!

Smilin' Jack

Smilin' Jack was an aviation/adventure strip created in 1933 by Zack Mosley. It didn't take long for Mosley to really settle into the style of cartooning that would define not only the strip but, in large part, the era in general. Just look at the middle panel: the crisp, economical linework and graceful caricatures!
