It's refreshing to see a nice Jon Whitcomb illustration that doesn't feature silverware! Good Housekeeping - March 1941 issue. Cover art by Jon Whitcomb.

If anyone recognizes where this was published, please let me know. In the top margin, it's labeled "Illustrated Romance Library No. 71" and entitled "Treacherous Kisses," but as illustrations were often re-used, this may have appeared with a different title. It has been attributed to Jon Whitcomb, but it appears unsigned. At the very least, it seems to have appeared as a slightly reworked sepia illo as seen here .

For keeps

Now, I love Jon Whitcomb's work, I do. I pretty much think he hit almost everything out of the ballpark, but this ad looks downright creepy. Her expression is one more of dread than pleasant surprise - that, and add to it the copy, "... for keeps," and it looks more like a movie poster for that Julia Robert's stalker film, Sleeping With The Enemy. Am I wrong here? Woman's Home Companion - December 1950.

Laugh when you may

"Laugh, boys and girls, when you may, but love isn't funny when it isn't play." "Nickel a Romance" by Hector Chevigny, as it appeared in the May 1954 issue of The Woman's Home Companion. A stunning spread by Jon Whitcomb - what an embrace!
