Vintage Ajax Cleanser newspaper advertisement from 1950. With a few notable exceptions, the ads found in old Sunday funnies are the equal of the comic strips themselves!

Much like its companion Mad - which of course survived as a magazine - Panic was a satire comic published by E.C. Comics and even boasted the similar slogan, "humor in a varicose vein." This November 1954 issue spoofed the movie "How To Marry a Millionaire" starring Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall. As if that wasn't enough, it sports a very unusual cover by Al Feldstein featuring a horizontal layout!

No jitterbug - although she's attended dance classes since her third birthday - she prefers roller-skating, at which she excels, poses here for CO-EDS photographer, at Astoria's Beebe Rink." "On Our Cover - Glamorous, twenty-two-year-old Barnard College senior Anne Halsey, College Humor's Cover Girl, is a sociology major, but her sensational success as a Powers' model is slowly but surely turning her pretty head to a more remunerative field. Although she does only part-time modeling at present, due to the exacting demands of Barnard's rigid curriculum, her work has already aroused considerable comment. It is our guess that Hollywood casting directors will soon be vying for her lovely face." College Humor - Picturing The Undergraduate Scene - Vol. 13, No. 3, July 1941.

The old adage is true, that success spawns imitation, and Li'l Ghost wasn't the only Casper clone to hover ethereally along, but he did anticipate the trend in anime by a couple of decades - just look at those eyes! Li'l Ghost - No. 1, February 1958.
