I'm neither one of the undead nor hell-spawn (at least not that I know), yet I don't generally leave the house as well-appointed as this dapper werewolf. Forbidden Worlds - Issue No. 4, January-February 1952.

Dick Briefer's Frankenstein series started out as oddball satire, but by the later issues, like the one pictured here, the title featured more horror stories to compete with the growing trend. Frankenstein - Issue No. 20, August-September 1952. Cover art by Dick Briefer.

This is about the time when watchdog groups and parents began to take note of the comics their children were reading, and, not surprisingly, issues like this fanned the flames of censorship. Mister Mystery - Issue No. 13, September-October 1953.

Every time I look at this cover, I find the composition ambiguous or misleading in the regard that the skeleton's position almost looks as if it's behind the boaters rather than in front, even with the perspective cues, like perhaps it's an over-sized skeleton. I think it's aided by the fact that the skeleton's posture looks like it is sneaking up on them. Maybe I'm just crazy... Mysterious Adventures - Issue No. 6, February 1952.

What's not to love on this masterpiece of illustration by George Evans for Shock SuspenStories ? The dramatic action, the use of light and shadows to heighten the mood, the coloring, the bound man's left foot breaking the text box at lower left? Add to that the perfect logo and the E.C. pedigree, and you have yet one more jaw-dropping cover in a long line of classics. Shock SuspenStories - No. 16, September 1954 issue. Finely-rendered and high impact cover art by George Evans.
