An uncommon configuration, this antique tri-fold postcard features a nice, sharp pivoting panoramic view of Eagle Grove, Iowa, circa 1912. Eagle Grove is just down the road from Thor (seriously!) in Wright County, in rural north central Iowa. From this view, it seems like Eagle Grove had all the makings of a burgeoning, medium-sized city, but its recent population has hovered around a quaint 3400.

Friends of mine tell me Hudson itself was a tough town back in the day, but this steamer excursion up the Hudson River from New York City to Albany must have been quite tamer by comparison. Copyright 1940 by Curt Teich.

I'm sure more than the occasional sunset in Taos is spectacular, but the strange blue hue around the old mission depicted on this 1940's postcard folder hints at the extra-terrestrial!

Is that a fence he's resting on, or just a graphic device of some sort? To my recollection, the Indians of the Southwest weren't known for their fence-building skills. Beautiful, nevertheless!

Lake, swing and figure 8

Terrific view of an almost forgotten amusement park, fittingly named Phalen Park, on Lake Phalen in St. Paul, Minnesota - early 1900's. From an antique postcard folder published by A.G. Barnet, St. Paul, Minn.

Walk of light

Wonderful view of the "walk of light" at the almost forgotten amusement park - fittingly named Phalen Park - on Lake Phalen in St. Paul, Minnesota - early 1900's. From an antique postcard folder published by A.G. Barnet, St. Paul, Minn.

Phalen Park Beautiful

Fantastic view showing the veritable frenzy of excitement at the long-lost and nearly forgotten amusement park on Lake Phalen in St. Paul, Minnesota - these views dating from the very early 1900's. From an antique postcard folder published by A.G. Barnet, St. Paul, Minn.

Vintage postcard view of south Main Street in Minot, North Dakota - circa 1940's.

Fort Atkinson

14 Nov 2011 145
It appears the town fathers followed the more western method of platting and laying out a town, as there's certainly room enough here for a wagon to turn around! Antique postcard view of south Main Street in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin - circa 1910's.

Vanishing point

Antique postcard view of Main Street through Aberdeen, South Dakota - circa 1920's. p.s. I want that Schlitz sign!!

Fun for all

06 Dec 2011 162
Vintage postcard view of the White City amusement park in Worcester, Massachusetts. White City was considered a trolley park, a name owing to the fact that picnic areas and recreational parks were often located at the terminus of a streetcar line in order to boost weekend ridership. From these early picnic and fair areas, bonafide amusement parks would often spring up. After a run which saw the addition of several state-or-the-art rides like the Zip roller coaster, the park closed in 1960. p.s. Looks like a nice park - anyone recall visiting it as a kid?

Mighty Oak

06 Dec 2011 161
Vintage linen postcard view of Oak Street in downtown Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania - circa 1940's. Do I want to wander into that old J.C. Penney store on the left and gape at all the 1940's merchanise? Darn tootin!

Night life

06 Dec 2011 214
Vintage linen postcard view of Sharon, Pennsylvania by night - circa 1943. With vintage postcards like this, I get to travel around the country and, more importantly, back in time for only a buck or two. I can just imagine the leisurely stroll down almost any main street in America, window gazing at all the nicely-appointed displays, the soft hues of neon light falling upon me as I listen for a big-band standard faintly emanating out of some late-night joint that warrants investigation...

Port Allegany

Vintage postcard view of downtown Port Allegany, Pennsylvania, on old U.S. Route 6 through the Seneca Highlands - circa 1960's.

Vintage postcard view of Montello, Wisconsin - "A friendly resort city of 1100 people. Ample resort accommodations available nearby, with best of fishing and boating on the many lakes in the area." Circa late 1960's.

Main Street, Compton

Scarce postcard folder with views from "the terrible earthquake in southern California, March 10, 1933." I had never seen these views prior to finding this folder, so for whatever it's worth, I thought I'd share them.
