Drax power station on load back in 2010.

Turbine

At the end of one of the the turbine/generator rows at Drax power station. High pressure turbine in the centre with the large silver pipes carrying superheated steam. At the sides are the governor valves, which control the amount of steam entering the turbine, and prevent overspeeding. The Turbine will be turning at 3000 RPM.

Biomass

Storage for wood pellets at Drax power station. Four of the six units here are biomass fired with an output of 2,400 Mw. The remaining units will be replaced by gas turbines if planning permission can be obtained.

Generation

One of the generator sets at Drax power station. With a capacity of 3,870Mw this is the UK's largest power station by a big margin.

Storage for the wood pellets burned at Drax power station. Quite how these are 'green' is beyond me as they are brought from the west side of the USA.

Drax in the sunset

Drax power station seen across the Humber estuary from Kilnsea. In the very far distance to the left of Drax the power station at Eggborough is just visible too.

At the end of one of the the turbine/generator rows at Drax power station. High Pressure Turbine on the right, the large silver pipes carry super heated steam, meet in the middle then pas over the turbine. On the left are the Steam Governor Valves ,which govern the amount of steam, and stop the Turbine from overspeeding. The Turbine will be turning at 3000RPM.

Generating Hall

Inside the generating hall at Drax. In the centre is the 660,000 kW No.1 turbo-generator and to the right behind the light is the exciter for the generator.

Boiler feed

Main boiler feed pump at Drax. This is driven by steam bled from the main turbine high pressure exhaust.

Gypsum

26 Jan 2017 375
A by-product of the flue gas desulphurisation process at coal-fired power station is gypsum which has a range of industrial uses including the production of plasterboard. This is the gypsum store at Drax where a significant amount awaits transport for processing.

Biomass power

Inside the generation hall at Drax power station. Most of the generation at the time was from biomass fuel.

Common Hawker

Whilst I was eating my lunch this teneral female Common Hawker ( Aeshna juncea ) landed in an adjacent bush and was good enough to remain whilst I took a photo.

A job with a view

Working on a cooling tower at Drax power station. It's a very long climb up that ladder.

Ash hopper

Base of the ash hopper underneath one of the boilers at Drax power station. If all else fails they stick a big bar through those yellow doors in order to remove encrustations.

Biomass inside

Biomass storage at Drax power station. Balloon on the outside, concrete on the inside, with a layer of foam sandwiched between. Simple but effective. If water got in they would have thousands of tons of soggy weetabix to dispose of!

Coal moving

Bucketwheel excavator and grader working the coal storage tip at Drax power station. Got to keep the coal moving to avoid spontaneous combustion.
