Denton Colliery Company

10 Aug 2019 1 314
Although Denton Colliery closed in 1929 the colliery offices have survived in use for a monumental mason's business. The main drawing shaft was situated behind here where a mound can just be glimpsed on the photgraph.

The Hyde Hall train

Best viewed LARGE Whilst out and about tracing the course of the Denton Colliery Railway this train appeared close to the route of the line which closed in the late 1920s. Speculation was rife as to whether it was the Paddy train for the miners, but it appears that more likely it provides accommodation for the ponies! ;-)

Great Wood Pit

The Great Wood Pit was winding coal during the early 19th century and continued in use until the closure of Denton Collieries at the end of 1929. Hidden away in woodland are the remains of the pithead with the bedstones for the drum, flywheel and crank of the beam engine winder that worked this pit.

Red Lion

Red terracotta for the Red Lion at Denton. I love to see this quality of architectural decoration.

Telegraph Office

I reckon that this is very early twentieth century. Around the corner the building is similarly lettered 'DENTON POST OFFICE'. Simple but effective use of terracotta to advertise the services therein. Sadly this is no longer the post office or indeed the telegraph office!
