Amidst vast stocks of loco coal the tender of JS 8210 is filled by the resident grab crane at the Sujiatun depot of China Rail.

Maybe not the sharpest image, but it does capture the crowded nature of the industrial locomotive repair workshops at Sujiatun. Today the site has been greatly modernised but still undertakes repairs to steam locomotives alongside diesels.

Sujiatun industrial locomotive works shunter GJ 1018 is pulling a SY class from the erecting shop whilst a further SY is undergoing a steam test on the left. Even in the 1990s tank engines were scarce in China and this was the only GJ that I ever saw in steam.

QJ class 2-10-2 locomotives were normally fitted with smoke deflectors and so to see this example at the depot at Sujiatun was quite a surprise.

Works pilot at the Sujiatun workshops that undertakes repairs to industrial steam locomotives was this 1959, Chengdu built GJ class tank locomotive.
