True to form it was dark and dull for the Scarborough Flyer this morning. 6201 Princess Elizabeth was at the head today passing Holmes Chapel.

The eyes of the posts

When the Macclesfield Canal was being built high embankments caused considerable difficulties to the engineers due to subsidence and slipping. Some of these banks have continued to cause problems and in these cases the normal hedgerow boundary was replaced by a fence comprising stone posts with holes cut in them to carry a tarred cable. It has been suggested that this may have been a re-use of the haulage cable from the Chapel Milton incline plane on the Peak Forest Tramway which was in the same ownership as the canal from the 1840s. This view is looking through some of the fenceposts on Dane-in-Shaw bank at Congleton. The cable has long gone but the tar remains around the holes.

Congleton power station

I believe this to be the 1930 power station building of the Congleton Corporation electricity supply undertaking which was nationalised under the 1947 Electricity Act and absorbed into the Merseyside and North Wales Electricity Board (MANWEB).

There is some rather nice terracotta work on the electricity substation at Congleton. CCES = Congleton Corporation Electricity Supply.

Edward Mill, Hatter St, Congleton

Edward Mill of 1924, was one of the last to be built in Congleton. It was a silk mill and replace the Albert Mill of 1871. It is now a gym and fitness centre.

Situated on Foundry Bank, the Victoria Mill was originally a silk mill and in 1858 was occupied by Berisfords for powered ribbon weaving. At that time it was known as Foundry Mill. Today it is divided into a number of commercial units.

Congleton Co-op No.2 Branch

Old Co-operative shops are often very easy to identify, even if they are no longer in Co-operative ownership. This example in Congleton sports typical beige terracotta work in greater quantity than I would normally have expected to see.

On a rare sunny afternoon I took a stroll with the dogs along the Bent Lane bridleway in Astbury. This view takes in the two Congleton water towers, peeping above the trees, with the Bosley telecommunications tower on the hill behind. A fine Cheshire hedgerow oak dominates the foreground.

Looking from Bosley Cloud

The view over Cheshire from Bosley Cloud is one of my favourites. The patchwork of fields in the sunlight leads to the viaduct on the railway between Congleton and Macclesfield. In 1962 the National Trust acquired 135 acres of land on the Cloud, of which 26 acres lie in Staffordshire and this includes this popular viewpoint.
