Caister Road bus depot

The Great Yarmouth bus depot was built for trams by Boulton and Paul of Norwich and was opened in 1898. It was severely damaged by bombing during WWII and reconstructed by 1947 apart from the façade, in an art-deco style with panels showing transport through the ages, which was constructed by F. R. Hipperson and Son Ltd in 1948.

The sunburst effect seen on a garage from the 1950s. A plate in the centre states made & supplied by C & R Constructions Ltd, Halifax & Prescot. This business is still in Halifax although now dealing with property maintenance. The company was started by Leslie Chippendale in 1955 who started making garden sheds and then asbestos and concrete garages. The company was so successful that within a few years it quickly became on of the biggest garden shed and garage manufacturers in the country. When integral garages became the fashion, Leslie moved on to making portable buildings and at one time the company employed 140 people.

Down's Garage in Mary Tavy. At one time this would have been a petrol filling station and car repair shop but now provides a base for a coach hire business.

I haven't seen a garage with faience before, and this example on Doncaster Road, Askern, is a gem. It is good that the modern signing on the frontage replicates the colours, if not quite the font, of the original. The buildings appear to have been erected in the 1920s. From the Doncaster Free Press: Claybourn’s was established by Jack Ernest Claybourn, who was born in Askern in 1893 and was a sergeant mechanic with the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War. He returned to Askern after the war and opened a bicycle and motorcycle repair shop. After he was married in 1922 his father-in-law, Sydney Webster, helped him establish a motor garage on Doncaster Road, Askern. The business thrived and in 1931, moved to premises at the corner of Hall Gate and Waterdale.

Aldeli

The modernist showroom of the former Tower Garage at Alderley Edge has now been converted into a cafe/eatery. It looks to me as if it has just landed from outer space!
