The Baum Washer tower stand prominent at the site of New Haden Colliery. The pit was plagued by water problems and, after attempts to work the Four Feet coal in 1942 led to an greatly increased inflow, it was abandoned in June 1943. On the Jalainur spoil tips

I set off across the moonscape that is the Jalainur spoil tips with a view to photographing the tipping process. It was a long way and the sun was beginning to set. Eventually I crested a bank and discovered the excavator spreading the spoil that had just been tipped. This had been hidden entirely but certainly provided a real bonus to the shot.

Chinese Industrial Posters - 2

Outside the small town of Guyaozi in Ningxia Province stands this gem. It features the local power station and the newly opened coal mine at Yangshangwan, of which the two domes over the coal storage areas are prominent. It is an advertisement aimed at attracting business investment into this remote desert area. The town, it says, is one of the biggest places where dinosaurs were living and has a great amount of resources, industry, good environment and historical culture!

Chinese Industrial Posters - 3

Another example of the art of Chinese industrial posters. This time from the dusty smog-ridden coal mining town of Yaojie in Gansu Province. At the entrance to Sankuang Mine No.3 stands this wonderful image of the 'glamorous' coal mining industry. The girls in the orange helmets are amazing, and as for the lump of coal that is being held aloft in the centre................ One thing is for sure, there can be very few days, if any, when the air here is clear enough to see the snow capped mountains around Yaojie. The caption is of less interest. It says 'Welcome to Sankuang'
