Hand signals

When working in a noisy environment or at a distance from others without radio communication then hand signals take on great importance. This painted board on the wall of the railway workshops in Baiyin makes clear what are the recognised signals there.

This scares me

Seen today in Nottingham after a morning when I was harassed severely for taking photographs quite legally in a public place. What the hell is this meant to achieve? Along with the blessed Gordon's plans to 'train' thousands of people in anti-terrorism measures this is another step in trying to convince the public that the bogeyman is out there and anyone doing anything that 'they' consider to be abnormal should be reported to the authorities immediately. Any real terrorist should be laughing like a drain at the way this sort of official action is rapidly reducing our freedoms. Very few people seem to be bothered by the significant erosion of freedom that the current government is steadily imposing on society.

Chinese Industrial Posters - 1

One of a number of posters that I have recorded on my travels across this fascinating country. This example is from the Baiyin mine and smelter complex in Gansu Province, west central China. Whilst a visit to the Xiaotieshan Lead Zinc mine was not permitted for security reasons (I understand that silver and gold are also produced), I was able to record this sign at the start of the mountain road that leads to the mine. It gives some idea of the surface layout. The caption reads 'Baiyin Group Co. welcome you to the mine of Xiaotieshan'.

Chinese Industrial Posters - 2

Outside the small town of Guyaozi in Ningxia Province stands this gem. It features the local power station and the newly opened coal mine at Yangshangwan, of which the two domes over the coal storage areas are prominent. It is an advertisement aimed at attracting business investment into this remote desert area. The town, it says, is one of the biggest places where dinosaurs were living and has a great amount of resources, industry, good environment and historical culture!

Chinese Industrial Posters - 3

Another example of the art of Chinese industrial posters. This time from the dusty smog-ridden coal mining town of Yaojie in Gansu Province. At the entrance to Sankuang Mine No.3 stands this wonderful image of the 'glamorous' coal mining industry. The girls in the orange helmets are amazing, and as for the lump of coal that is being held aloft in the centre................ One thing is for sure, there can be very few days, if any, when the air here is clear enough to see the snow capped mountains around Yaojie. The caption is of less interest. It says 'Welcome to Sankuang'
