Warner Gothard Building

12 Jan 2025 1 61
Barnsley has a lot of art deco architecture in the central area including this block of offices and shops at the corner of Eldon Street and Regent Street South. It was built in 1927 for photographer Warner Gothard whose initials can be seen above the first floor window at the corner. Above the ground floor it is faced in cream terracotta.

Originally closed in 1966 the Barnsley Main No.2 shaft was reopened to transfer workers from the Barrow pit, which closed in 1985 owing to geological problems. It finally closed in 1991 and the headgear and engine house are now preserved in the 'care' of the local council.

Two of the terracotta faces decorating the former co-operative shop on Market Street, Pall Mall, Barnsley. I have no idea whether they represent anyone in particular.

The Royal Hotel

Cream terracotta often looks rather careworn as it reaches 100 years of age. This is certainly true of this extension to the Royal Hotel and associated commercial units along Royal Street in Barnsley. The grade II listed public house facing Church Street onto which this extension was added has reverted to its original name of The White Bear .

Water tower on the old Co-operative shop building on New Street, Barnsley. I suspect that this was to supply a sprinkler system. Since I took this photograph the building has been demolished.

Butterfield's Drapery Market

Closed in 1975, Butterfield's Drapery Market on Market Hill, Barnsley, had been run from around the 1830s by successive members of both the Butterfield and Maisie familes. The premises also comprised a cafe where adverts once announced: 'Dainty meals served in pleasant surroundings.' Elliott in the book 'The Making of Barnsley' (1988) states that previously the Butterfield site had 'witnessed the comings and goings of a long succession of drapery bazaars' including those belonging to John Ludlam and Henry and Joseph Clarke. It is now a bar.

Photography is not a crime

This is not the photo that I intended to take here. I was just setting up for a shot of this terracotta faced building in Regent St South, Barnsley, when I was suddenly aware of the lass seen here on the left lower corner of the image. On seeing the camera she had emerged from Mini Mode Boutique and was demanding to know what I was photographing. On being told I was photographing the building she stated that it was not allowed as it contained private businesses. So what I responded, I am on a public street and can photograph whatever I want. She then said that I should ask permission before photographing the shop and, having had enough of her silliness, I told her 'no chance' and fired the camera. She went back into the shop and closed the door. Very strange world we live in. The building dates from 1927 and has some nice art-deco features.. Most of the shop doors are original with the nice glazing bars.

This wonderful lion sits atop the old Co-op building on the corner of Market Street and Wellington Street in Barnsley. In 1911 this building replaced an original building of 1865, as the central grocery department and is now listed Grade II. The Barnsley British Co-operative society was founded in 1862.
