One of a number of "battery farms" that have been established around the country to supply backup electricity supplies when demand is high and generation options are limited. These businesses bid to National Grid to suppply electricity at times of peak demand or low output from other sources such as wind. This is the often hidden side of the power generation system in the UK and a consequence of changing to renewable sources for significant amounts of power supply. This new battery storage facility at Bury, Greater Manchester, comprises sixteen 1.25MW/1.25MWh lithium ion containers.

We went for a Sunday Lunch trip on the East Lancashire Railway and very good it was. The Hughes Crab that was hauling the train was handled gently so as not to spill our drinks! Before setting off the train catering staff grabbed their own lunch before a busy time serving two coaches of diners and then afternoon teas on a later run.

The Jericho district of Bury is along Rochdale Old Road towards Heywood. It was here that the Bury Union Workhouse was erected on the south side of the road, whilst Taylor's brickworks was on the north side a short distance further to the east. Today the site of the works is a housing estate.

A peek into the section of the works at Buckley Wells that is operated by Ian Riley. Taken during the East Lancs Railway night photoshoot in February 2009. Fellow Flickrite The View From The North was told off for making a similar view , but I managed to escape the attention of the authorities!

The Bury Art Picture House is on Knowsley Street. The first theatre here was in a converted warehouse that had formerly been a Baptist chapel. This was demolished in 1922 and replaced by the present building, to the baroque design of Albert Winstanley, which was completed in 1923. It seated 1,136 divided between stalls and pit and a 12 row balcony with 2 bow fronted boxes each side. In the 1940s it was operated by the Bury Cinematograph Co., Ltd. There was an L-shaped cafe, originally known as the Oriental or Indian Lounge. The cinema closed in 1964 and it has since been used for Bingo, Pool and now as licensed premises. The white terracotta faience still looks good with the descriptive lettering. It is listed Grade II.
