So, ‘steel steeds’ in a double decks bicycle rack near the Centraal Station in Amsterdam. Most bikes in the rack do not have gears and that is quite common in The Netherlands. Today there are the unofficial Dutch Headwind Cycling Championships which uses bicycles without gears. These championships can only be held on a day like this, a storm with a force of 9 to 10 on the Beaufort scale (75-102 km/h) named ‘Ciara’ is blowing today. Het is eeuwen geleden dat ik achter een piano zat, dus de oefening ben ik kwijt. Maar goed, op verschillende grotere stations staat een piano, of in dit geval een vleugel. En iedereen kan er op spelen, en dit onder het mom van ‘deel je talent’. Dit is de vleugel op het Centraal Station in Amsterdam. Hij staat wat in een verloren hoekje, maar er zijn voldoende mensen die hem weten te vinden. De foto is in zwart-wit want het licht was erg verschillend van aard, en bovendien zijn de toetsen en bladmuziek zwart-wit. – – – It is ages ago since I sat behind a piano, so in the mean time I lost my practice. But well, at different bigger railway stations there is a piano, in this case a grand piano. And everybody can play it, under the cloak of ‘share your talent’. This is the grand piano in the Centraal Station in Amsterdam. It is somewhat lost is a small corner, but there are sufficient people who find it and play it. The photo is for different reasons in black and white: the light sources were of different quality, the keys are black and white as is sheet music. – – – In all musical links a (grand) piano is played. One of my favourite pianoconcertos is Tchaikovsky’s in B flat. In de Cuyperspassage van het Centraal Station van Amsterdam. Dit is een tunnel voor voetgangers en fietsers, onder de westkant van het station vanaf de veren (zie twee weken terug) naar het centrum. Eén kant is voor fietsers, de andere kant voor voetgangers. De voetgangerszijde is geheel bekleed met Oud-Hollandse tegeltjes, de muur laat een kunstwerk zien in Delfts blauw, dit gaat van abstracte kunst over in een ouderwets zeegezicht met Oud-Hollandse schepen. De fietserszijde is bekleed met geluidsabsorberend roosters en asfalt. De tunnel is vernoemd naar de bekende architect van het station: Pierre Cuypers. This is a tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists, and it is going under the westernside of the station from the ferries (see challenge two weeks ago) to the centre. One side is for pedestrians, the other for cyclists. The pedestrians side is lined with newly made Old-Dutch tiles, and shows an artwork in Delfts Blauw, this goes from an abstract art to an old-fashioned seaview with Old-Dutch ships. The cyclists side is lined with sound absorbing grid and tarmac. The tunnel is named after the well-known architect of the Station: Pierre Cuypers. Om als voetganger of fietser van Amsterdam naar Amsterdam-Noord (Buiksloot) te gaan ga je met de pont naar de overkant van het IJ, een afstand van iets meer dan 300 meter. Deze varen dan ook af en aan, in de spits vertrekt er om de 3 à 4 minuten een pont. Op het hoogtepunt van de spits zijn er vier ponten in bedrijf. Daarnaast zijn er nog twee andere veren: een naar het IJ-plein, en een naar de NDSM-werf. Het gebruik van de pont is gratis, het antwoord op de vraag van de muziek luidt dan ook de Gemeente Amsterdam. Op de foto een aankomende en een vertrekkende pont. These ferries sail off and on, during rush hour there is leaving a ferry every 3 or 4 minutes. During the busiest hour here are 4 ferries at once in use. There are also two other connections from the Centraal Station to the IJplein and the NDSM-werf. Using the ferry is free, the answer on the question raised by the music is the local governemnt of Amsterdam. On the photo an arriving and departing ferry. Aan de noordkant van het Centraal Station leggen de ponten van en naar Noord aan. Verder was vroeger dit schimmige gebied niet alleen een doorgaande weg, maar ook een onofficiële tippelzone. Tegenwoordig is het anders: de ponten leggen nog steeds aan, maar de doorgaande weg ligt nu ondergronds, op de eerste verdieping, op dezelfde hoogte als de treinen ligt een busstation en op de begane grond ligt nu een glimmend winkelcentrum en een fiets- en voetpad. En alles overkapt. De foto is op meerdere wijzen omgedraaid: niet alleen de kleuren zijn negatief, maar in de foto zit ook een grote weerspiegeling. Muziek kan ook omgedraaid worden, volgens sommigen zouden op deze manier zich duivelse boodschappen in muziek bevinden. Zou dat dan ook in fotografie zijn? Een bekend voorbeeld van omgedraaide muziek is de 18e variatie op een thema van Paganini door Rachmaninov. Hoe dat werkt wordt in het begin van de video uitgelegd, de 18e variatie begint op 20:20. www.youtube.com/watch?v=c33q87s03h4 Het moeilijke van deze opgave was een goede foto te vinden die ook nog interessant was in negatief. – – – The northern side of the Centraal Station in Amsterdam is the mooring place for the ferries to and from Amsterdam-Noord. In recent history this was a rather shady area with not only a through going road, but also an unofficial tippelzone (zone for streetprostitution). These days it is different: the ferries are still mooring, but the through going road is now underground, on the first floor, at the same height as the trains, is a busstation and on the ground floor there is now a shiny shopping centre and a cycle- and footpath. And everything under a new roof. The photo is reversed in several ways: not only the colours are negative, there is also a big reflection. Music can also be reversed. According to some people music may contain hidden diabolical messages if played reversed. I wonder if that also could be the case for photography. A well known example of reversed music is the 18th variation on a theme by Paganini by Rachmaninov.
