The Sunday Challenge: De buurt Uitzicht op het kunstmatige eiland Wittenburg over de Kattenburgervaart. Links het uitzicht van rond 1950, rechts het huidige uitzicht. Er is heel veel veranderd in de afgelopen 72 jaar, met name in de jaren 1970 en 1980. De protestantse Oosterkerk (links) is gerestaureerd, de protestantse gemeente is al jaren geleden verhuisd en gefuseerd met andere gemeenten. De kerk is nu in gebruik als buurthuis en er zijn van tijd tot tijd ook kerkdiensten. De katholieke Annakerk (linker foto, midden) is gesloopt. Het gebouw van de bierbrouwerij De Parel (rechts) is gerestaureerd tot appartementen. Alle andere gebouwen, zowel krotwoningen als industriële gebouwen, hebben in de jaren 1980 plaats gemaakt voor sociale woningbouw, waarvan inmiddels ook al een groot deel is verkocht. The Protestant Oosterkerk (left) has been restored, the Protestant congregation moved and merged with other congregations many years ago. The church is now used as a community centre and there are also church services from time to time. The catholic Annakerk (left-hand photo, centre) has been demolished. The building of the brewery De Parel (right) has been restaurated to apartments. All the other buildings, both mostly houses of questionable quality and industrial buildings, made way for social housing in the 1980s, much of which has since been sold in the last 20 or so years. The Sunday Challenge: drieluik Afgelopen zondag heb ik een lang stuk hardgelopen en onderweg kwam ik voorbij een plek waar ik inspiratie vond voor dit drieluik. Een paar dagen later heb ik dit dan gefotografeerd, hoewel de omstandigheden wel wat anders waren. Wat is het dan? Eigenlijk is het onderwerp saai. Namelijk de onderkant van een betonnen brug. En die vlekken dan, hoor ik je vragen. Dat is water, beschenen door de zon, en wat weerspiegeld wordt op het beton en wat een beetje golft in de wind. In de bewerking heb ik de foto’s zwart-wit gemaakt, en op zijn kop gezet. Dat maakt de groef wat raadselachtiger. Het resultaat is dromerig: vlekkerig, onduidelijk, deels onscherp beeld, voor meerdere uitleggen vatbaar. – – – The Sunday Challenge: triptych Last Sunday, I did a long run and on the way I passed a place where I found inspiration for this triptych. A few days later I photographed it, although the circumstances were somewhat different. So what is it? Actually, the subject is boring. Namely the underside of a concrete bridge. How about those spots, I hear you ask. That is water, shone on by the sun, which is being reflected on the concrete and which ripples a little in the wind. During processing, I made the photos black and white, and turned them upside down. This makes the groove a little more enigmatic. The Sunday Challenge: Spookachtig De nachtmerrie van architecten en ook van vele bewoners: een doorzonwoning. Toch gaan de woningen in dit nieuwe flatgebouw grif van de hand voor vele tonnen. Dat is op zich ook weer een nachtmerrie. – – – The Sunday Challenge: Spooky The nightmare of architects and also of many residents: housing where one can see through from front to end. Yet the flats in this new block of flats are selling fast and for tons of money which is also a kind of nightmare. Note: the Dutch word ‘doorzonwoning’ (through sun housing) means housing where the sun can shine through from front to back.
