On June 14, 1846 a group of Yanqui insurrectionists raised the Bear Flag in Sonoma Plaza declaring the foundation of the Republic of California in a brazen takeover of the territory from the Mexican Military Governor, General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. How I transported myself back in time to March 28, 1776, so as to photograph Juan Bautista de Anza as he arrived in San Francisco, will have to remain a secret. Nevertheless, as official photographer of the famous De Anza Expedition, I took this photograph while he surveyed the land for settlement on his noble steed.
