Most of the time this tiny cactus hides within the rocky ground cover, hoping to remain unnoticed. Once a year for a week or so, it displays a set of beautiful blossoms in an attempt to attract winged visitors, all the while bristling with sharp spines to warn off all others.

Once a year for a day or two, my Golden Torch Cactus (Echinopsis spachiana) seeks attention from winged visitors. For the rest of the year it displays rows of needles to keep away intruders . . .

In the Northern Hemisphere of our planet, winter is moving steadily towards the annual Spring Equinox as Summer awaits patiently for the solstice beyond.
Like a mirror in reverse, those of you in the Southern Hemisphere will soon see the Autumnal Equinox arrive with Winter waiting in the background.
Happy Seasons!

Beautiful colors on short margined leaves with blue-gray streaks put this spiny succulent in a class of it’s own!

My new Argentine saguaro cactus from the Andean slopes may be small now, but aspires to grow to a height of 7 meters when it reaches adulthood (in about 40 years).

My new Brazilian resident cactus, Tacinga saxatilis, raises it's hackles at even the slightest sign of intruders. It is way too sensitive! Calm down, alright already . . .

Many seem to be on edge during these stressful days. Displays of antagonism and malice are becoming more commonplace. Instead of raising one’s hackles at the outside world, I recommend a more live-and-let-live approach to life.
