Stone Bench

Long ago, in what seems like a different life, a young mochilero/backpacker adventurer passed through Colombia, visiting an archaeological park called Tierra Dentro. A fellow traveler snapped this rare picture of me on the other side of the lens of my Yashica travel camera. This photo was taken by a Yashica Electro 35CC film camera and COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens with a Pro 52mm (UV) Japan filter using Kodak 135 Daylight film, the negative scanned by an HP Scanjet G4050 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.

San Agustín Statuette

Near San Agustin, Colombia, a pre-Incan culture left many carved statues in and near their tombs and sacred places. Many of the statues depict a rather blood-thirsty deity. An hour walk from town brings one to a site of excavated tombs and a display of statues and statuettes in a forest reserve trail. This photo was taken by a Yashica Electro 35CC film camera and COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens with a Pro 52mm (UV) Japan filter using Kodak Ektachrome 64 slide film, the positive transparency scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.

Tomb Raider

In August 1975 a friend and I explored the ridge tops high above the archaeological site of Tierradentro, Colombia. As we strolled along the pathway we discovered a grim hidden secret. Numerous ancient tombs along the ridge line had been callously broken into and looted and left open to the elements. I used my Yashica Electro 35CC to record my overland journey, typically visitors attractions and landscapes, but never a crime against the archaeological heritage of a nation until then. The desecration of these 1,500 year old tombs likely yielded a few silver and gold objects left with the dead. We asked some of the staff in the "main archaeological site" below in the valley about the grave robbers. From their "Cat that ate the canary" expressions we decided to not push too hard. As tourist "hippy" backpackers we had no authority to do much other than keep our mouths shut. Tierradentro Highlands

The lovely Andean highlands surrounding the archaeological site of Tierradentro are a sweet 40-year old photographic memory for me in this image restored to life from my archives. Crossroads

The local bus from La Plata to Picuarte dropped me and a companion here. It is 12 kilometers to Tierradentro the driver informed us. The silence and majesty of the Colombian highlands will always linger in my memory. This photo was shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC with a COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens using Kodak color slide film and scanned by an Epson Perfection V600.

Tierradentro Tomb

15 Jun 2013 661
Exploring the heights above Tierradentro in southern Colombia I came across numerous violated tombs, robbed of their treasures. The simple camera I owned was not of the greatest quality, yet was able to record the pitch black interior by candle light, propped on a ledge. The automatic feature gave a 8-10 second exposure. This photo was shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC film camera, the negative scanned by an HP Scanjet G4050 and digitally rendered in Photoshop.

San Agustín Forest Spirit
