USA - Arizona, Grand Canyon National Park

One of the most famous Grand Canyon National Park is one of the most well known national parks in the USA. It is considered being one of the seven wonders of nature. Millions of years ago a part of the earth's crust was pushed up, creating the Colorado Plateau of which the Grand Canyon is now a part. Over millions of years the Colorado River has made its way through the rocky layers of the plateau, where the rocks were (and still are) polished further and further. Because each rock layer consists of a different type of rock, the effects of the force of the water are different everywhere. This has created a complicated system of deep, capriciously shaped ravines. Besides the Colorado River other erosive forces, such as frost and wind, have also had a great influence.
The dimensions of the canyon are enormous with a length of 446 km’s and a width between 18 and 29 km’s. The maximum depth is about 1.600 meters. The area became a national monument on 11 January 1908 and a national park on 26 February 1919. In 1979 the park was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
We visited several viewpoints of the Grand Canyon between Grand Canyon Village and Desert View. At the last one we were during sunset and could admire the beautiful colours of sky and ravine walls.
Without any doubt Grand Canyon was one of the highlights of our visit to Arizona/Utah, but to be honest the (impressive) landscape at the different viewpoints was often more or less the same.
Greece - Nikiti

Nikiti is a popular tourist town on the west coast of the Sithonia peninsula.
In the summer months, the terraces along the sea are crowded with tourists. In the port of Nikiti tourist boats, yachts and fishing boats moor (PiP1). The village offers many restaurants, bars, cafes - especially along the seafront - and shops.
The northern part of Nikiti is the most traditional neighborhood (PiP2). The old houses from the beginning of the 19th century along the narrow streets are built of stone. The red tiles and gardens create a friendly atmosphere in this (quiet) part of Nikiti.
Greece - Nafpaktos

Nafpaktos is a town with a history of 3.500 years. It is well known for the naval battle of Lepanto, which took in place in 1571. It was a clash between the fleet of the allied Christian and Ottoman forces in the Gulf of Corinth close to Lepanto (as Nafpaktos was called that days). The victory of the so called Holy League was significant as it stopped the expansion of the Ottoman Empire into the Mediterranean.
Nafpaktos is dominated by a Venetian castle on the top of a hill some hundred meters above the town. The castle has some of the largest and most well-preserved fortifications in Greece and offers breathtaking views towards the Gulf of Corinth with the beautiful Rio-Antirio bridge, the opposite coasts of Peloponnesus and Nafpaktos and its Venetian harbour.
Nowadays Nafpaktos is considered being one of the most picturesque places in mainland Greece with a medieval character, beautiful beaches and green hilly surroundings.

Greece - Crete, Matala

Sunset at the beach of Matala.
Matala once was the place of the flower power and the hippy-scene. Before 1970, when the flower-children and the hippies overrunned the quiet fishing village, Matala only existed of ten houses, one tavern, a beautiful beach and of course the ancient cave houses to which Matala owns her fame.
Nobody knows quite who started cutting these caves, but it seems likely that they were first hollowed out as Roman or early Christian tombs. The artificial caves, with their passages, stone beds and fireplaces, have now been put under monumental care.
Just hope Ipernity will survive !!

This is the third time I have (re)posted this picture; always when the survival of Ipernity is at stake. After 2016 (takeover by IMA) and late 2020 (major technical problems) I feel the future is hanging by a thread again. If I read the team message from January 28. correctly, two crucial posts on the IMA board must be filled by 25 February.
Please read the last two Club News: www.ipernity.com/blog/team/4737428 and www.ipernity.com/blog/team/4738398
Again I keep my fingers crossed.

Nederland - Wijk bij Duurstede, ‘Rijn en Lek’

Windmill ‘Rijn en Lek’ is dating back to 1659, when it was built on top of the - only remaining - medieval city gate of the town, the Leuterpoort. In the beginning it was used as a bark mill, but around 1820 it became a flourmill, which it still is. The mill stands proudly above the gate on the dike, next to the water meadow outside the city wall and nearly always catches enough wind.
The ‘Rijn en Lek’ is the only drive-through-windmill in the world. It is often confused with the windmill painted by Ruisdael, called ‘The windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede’, which stood a few blocks away.
The mill got its name ‘Rijn en Lek’ due to the fact that the Rhine changes its name into Lek River downstream from Wijk bij Duurstede.
