Pileated Woodpecker / Dryocopus pileatus

24 Jan 2011 141
We came across this beautiful female Pileated Woodpecker while on a three-hour walk through the woods at North Glenmore Park on Saturday morning. Most of my photos either showed a blurry head or the head was stuck in the hole she was excavating, but I was lucky to at least get this one. They are such huge birds and spectacular, and I love their striped breast feathers. The male Pileated has a red moustache and the red crest comes down over the forehead. Though it doesn't look like it, this bird was way above me. Size: body, 16 to 19 in (40 to 49 cm); wingspan, 26 to 30 in (66 to 75 cm) Weight: 8.8 to 12.3 oz (250 to 350 g en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pileated_Woodpecker
