Cladonia bellidiflora, 'Toy Soldiers'

Thanks to Doug for the ID on this one! We saw this different Lichen while on a botanizing hike into the mountains, along the Pocaterra Cirque Trail three days ago. Doug, I hope you don't mind if I use your description of this - if I try putting it into my own words, I might get it all wrong : ) "Cladonia bellidiflora 'Toy Soldiers' is a fruticose lichen with large bright red apothecia on a squamule covered podetia. Growing on a rock that is thickly covered with mosses." Or is this Cladonia Borealis?

This is a photograph taken on a hike we did yesterday, along the Pocaterra Cirque trail in Kananaskis, off Highway 40 at the Ptarmigan Cirque parking lot. I had never been here before - it was just spectacular and so enjoyable, especially before the rain moved in, LOL.

Pocaterra Cirque

Another view from our hike on 25th July, on the Pocaterra Cirque Trail, Kananaskis (off Highway 40). The deep V dip on the top of the ridge close to the centre of the image is where the two Mountain Sheep were standing silhouetted against the sky (photo posted the other day). This view will give you an idea of the power of 18x zoom plus cropping on my computer, LOL!
