Almost ready for the birds

08 Oct 2012 225
Not the most photogenic Sunflower, but I was still happy to see it in someone's garden when I was on a bird walk on 20 September 2012, across the Bow River from Mallard Point, Fish Creek Park. I'm also enjoying seeing the bright colour and the beautiful blue sky in my image this morning, as it is dark and raining today. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunflower

It's that time of the year, brrr .....

Ice crystals seen on the end of a fallen branch, east side of the Bow River between Burnsmead and Highway 22X, yesterday morning.

Handsome little guy

In certain parts of the city, the little Black-capped Chickadees will fly down to your hand, even if you are simply pointing something out to someone or even just raising your camera to take a photo. On the very rare occasion, a Downy Woodpecker copies its Chickadee friends. This little male gave this person the thrill of a lifetime when it landed on her hand.

Gulls, gulls and more gulls

How anyone can notice one gull that is a different species from the rest when there are endless gulls in a group always amazes me, LOL! Just a view taken along the Bow River on a sunny October 17th. We walked all morning, along the east side of the river from Burnsmead to Highway 22X and back.

Fall colours near the Bow River

28 Sep 2010 184
We get very little red colour in our fall here in Alberta, unlike further east in Canada. Not sure if the splashes of red here were rose leaves or something else, but it was nice to see it added to our usual yellow and orange. Seen three days ago on a morning walk at Mallard Point, Fish Creek Park, on the eastern side of the Bow River.

Silver threads

I think this has to be just the usual non-native, invasive Yellow Clematis that we get here. I don't remember ever noticing that its leaves turn red in the fall. Unless this plant had wound itself around a different plant with red, autumn leaves? Anyway, the low bush was such a gorgeous colour and looked beautiful with the tumble of silver hairs of the seedheads. Seen on yesterday's walk at Mallard Point, on the east side of the Bow River. Here comes the sun, FINALLY, after an overcast, cold, wet "summer - yay!!!!!! Enjoy it, everyone. I have a volunteer shift to go to, so will be indoors : (

I love bright jackets

02 Jan 2010 217
This is where a few of us ended up yesterday afternoon, on the east side of the Bow River. The morning was the New Year's Day Bird Count for Fish Creek Park and then, in the afternoon, we could choose whether to go or not to look for any less common sightings that had been reported in the morning. A Snow Goose had been seen in this area but, despite a really careful look for it in the afternoon until it got dark (!), it was not to be seen. The sunlight was pretty at this moment, and I always love to see someone wearing a bright, cheery jacket in winter time.

End of a cold winter's day

This was taken on New Year's Day, in the late afternoon. A few of us had gone over to this side of the Bow River (across from the east end of Fish Creek Park) in the hopes of seeing the elusive Snow Goose that had been reported in the area. I think the temperature was only around -14C, but it felt more like -30C, especially when standing in one spot for a long time. No sign of the Snow Goose that day, but some of us were lucky enough to see it on 5th January.

Frosted Burdock

24 Feb 2009 168
Common Burdock is an introduced plant from Eurasia. It has become an unwanted species in our parks and natural areas. I find the flowers very attractive and also love to see the seedpods, never forgetting, however, that this has become an invasive species. This was taken on a cold winter's day on the eastern side of the Bow River, across from Mallard Point.

Transformation

25 Feb 2009 187
Taken on 7th February, when we had the most amazing hoar frost in the morning, especially near the edge of the river. I've posted at least a couple of other winter scenes from that walk and this time I thought I'd post this small plant that had been transformed into a pillar of ice crystals.

Last one in is a ... chicken?

Decided to post this photo after all : ) Taken on a sunny, mid-February morning on a walk along the east side of the Bow River in SE Calgary. Actually, perhaps these Canada Geese have a little more "sense" than those humans who take part in a "Polar Plunge"!

Whoooo are yoooo?

07 Feb 2009 201
We found this Great Horned Owl on the east side of the Bow River, opposite Hull's Wood and Sikome, Fish Creek Park, this morning. Perhaps this could be one of the two young owls from last year from Sikome? The poor thing was being greatly harassed by Magpies! After the morning walk, I called in at Sikome to check on "my" owls after hearing from a friend that the female was at the top of the nesting tree yesterday. However, today, two of the owls were in the winter Spruce tree and one was in a nearby Spruce tree behind the wire fence. I was SO glad I called in here, as I was treated to a little Weasel in his white, winter coat. Took me by surprise when I got home and looked at my photos, as there is no black tip to the tail and the tail was only fairly short. Maybe some animal caught it by the tail and it now has a shorter tail? So, now I'm not sure if it was a Long-tailed or a Short-tailed Weasel (Ermine).

Are you ready for spring?

This is how our day started off yesterday! We began our walk around 9:00 a.m., along the eastern side of the Bow River (opposite Hull's Wood, Fish Creek Park). The ice crystals were gorgeous, including on the metal, chainlink fence. The grasses and bushes were spectacular : ) This photo tied for first place in the Super Eco "Whatever the Weather" contest, for March 2009. It now resides in the Super Eco Hall of Fame. My thanks to all those who voted for my photo!
