Semipalmated Plover

29 Sep 2008 93
A very heavily cropped image of a Semipalmated Plover, a first for me! We saw a group of six of these birds today, on drive south east of the city, to the Wyndham/Carseland, Langdon Reservoir and Weed Lake area. These birds are not often seen - they are migrating quickly through the area at the moment - so we were lucky to see them. They are similar to, but smaller than, the more common Killdeer. They were amazingly well camouflaged amongst the rocks.

Glasswort, I think

I noticed this brightly coloured plant when I was on a bird outing on Sunday, south-east of the city, to the Wyndham/Carseland area, Langdon Reservoir and Weed Lake. I'm not completely sure, but I think this is Glasswort, also called Samphire. This species of wildflower grows at the margins of saline lakes and ponds, which is where I found this. It turns bright red in late summer.
